Major research platforms drive industrial innovation.
Guo Dongcai, 61, is a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Hunan University. However, his work extends beyond the laboratory: as a senior technical expert and technology manager at the Yuelu Mountain Industrial Innovation Center, he has visited numerous petrochemical enterprises across Hunan Province.
The Yuelu Mountain Industrial Innovation Center was established in Changsha, Hunan, in 2023. It comprises four laboratories—smart manufacturing, industrial design, inspection and testing, and food engineering and safety—and eight research departments. The center’s core mission is to advance R&D in Hunan’s industrial sector and support enterprises in driving technological innovation.
“Our technical manager’s role is to serve as a bridge between researchers and enterprises. We thoroughly understand the technical challenges faced by companies and facilitate connections with the relevant research teams to collaboratively address these issues,” Guo Dongcai explained.
In 2024, during a visit to Changde New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. in Yueyang, Hunan, Guo learned that the company sought to optimize the production process for alcohol ether products. Subsequently, he facilitated a collaboration between the company and the research team led by Professor Luo Xiao at Hunan University.
After more than half a year of joint research efforts, the project has made significant progress: both production material usage and energy consumption indicators have been reduced, and production efficiency has been effectively improved. Company staff said the firm is currently advancing a second-phase R&D project with Professor Luo’s team. If progress continues smoothly, once the project is put into production it is expected to save the company nearly 10 million yuan (about USD 1.41 million) in costs annually.
So far, the center has staffed more than 50 technical managers who have provided services to 2,593 enterprises in the province. "Large enterprises already have stable cooperative resources, so our technical managers focus more on small and medium-sized enterprises. By solving the technical bottlenecks of SMEs, we help Hunan's industries achieve transformation and upgrading," said Deputy Director Yu Jinqing. The center plans to expand the technical manager team to 100 people, enabling more university professors to bring their expertise directly into factory workshops.
In addition, the center has partnered with the Hunan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology to establish an online matchmaking platform, facilitating collaboration between enterprises and expert teams. Yu explained that registered companies can post their technological needs and identify suitable experts on the platform, while domestic and international expert teams can leverage it to accelerate the commercialization and implementation of research findings.
Official data show that in 2024, the center identified 2,422 technology needs submitted by 1,683 enterprises, signed research collaboration agreements with 121 companies, and secured collaborative funding totaling RMB 234 million. In addition, addressing common technological challenges across key industries in Hunan Province, the center launched 40 targeted research projects, yielding a cumulative total of 22 scientific and technological achievements and developing nine new products.
Among them, in the research project on air-floating dynamic pressure bearing technology, the center collaborated with CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. to successfully develop multiple air-suspended high-speed centrifugal blowers of different power ratings; the related products have already been exported to several Southeast Asian countries.
Local officials stated that in recent years, Changsha has been accelerating the development of major research platforms, strengthening the coordinated synergy between scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation, and making every effort to advance toward its goal of becoming a global R&D hub.
