On July 30, 2019, Zhongnan Intelligent welcomed a lively group of visitors from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC): the 2019 Changsha Doctoral Study Delegation on Intelligent Manufacturing. Energetic and full of youthful enthusiasm, these doctoral students combine theory with practice, taking their research directly into the field. Focusing on key areas of local government reform, they visit relevant government departments, enterprises, and grassroots operations for exchange and study. Zhongnan Intelligent was an important stop on the delegation’s tour of Hunan Province.

The company was delighted to host the students from USTC. On the delegation’s arrival, Dr. He Li, Deputy General Manager, held a warm and friendly exchange with them, introducing the intelligent manufacturing industry and the company, and answering their questions on intelligent manufacturing and robotics in detail one by one.

After the discussion, Dr. Duan Xiaogang, Director of the company’s R&D Center, guided the students through the showroom and introduced Zhongnan Intelligent’s applications and R&D work in intelligent manufacturing. The Innovation Center’s operations team then gave a detailed tour of the Hunan Industry 4.0 Innovation Center, giving the students an in-depth look at leading-edge digital twin technology and at R&D in laser technology applications, special equipment surface treatment, robotic lightweight welding, 5G-based digital production lines, and the industrial internet and blockchain.

Through this study visit, the USTC delegation focused on Changsha’s most representative intelligent manufacturing enterprises, using individual cases as a window onto the broader state of the city’s intelligent manufacturing sector. Upgrading intelligent manufacturing means upgrading not just a single company but an entire industrial cluster and industrial chain. Successful experience in intelligent manufacturing offers valuable lessons not only in established fields such as construction machinery, automotive manufacturing, and equipment manufacturing, but also in emerging areas of advanced manufacturing. Bringing USTC’s characteristic thoroughness to their work, the members of the delegation drew on their own strengths and specialisms to conduct practical research around the strategies of the localities they visited — work that will inform their future efforts.
Postscript:
Over last year’s National Day holiday, a widely shared online article described how, at the age of 24, Mao Zedong spent his long vacation doing three things: travelling great distances, reading widely, and meeting many people.
The article recounts a summer’s day in 1917 when an elderly local scholar, hearing urgent knocking at his gate, opened it to find two travel-worn but high-spirited young men standing outside.
Who were these two young men, and what had brought them there?
From mid-July to August 16, the account continues, the pair travelled on foot through five counties — Changsha, Ningxiang, Anhua, Yiyang, and Yuanjiang — covering more than 900 li over the course of a month. Along the way they met people from every stratum of urban and rural society, from farmers and boatmen to landowners, county magistrates, elderly scholars, and temple abbots, learning a great deal about local life and customs. This combination of travel and first-hand investigation went on to shape many of Mao Zedong’s ideas.
